Remai Modern’s primary focus for acquisitions is on the art of our time, alongside the art of the recent past. The collection is a resource for exploring the development of art and culture in the context of modernity and globalization.

Remai Modern’s collecting activities began in 2014, building on the legacy of the Mendel Art Gallery’s 51-year history (1964-2015). The ever-growing collection now totals over 8,000 works by artists of local, national and international significance. Remai Modern acknowledges the support many donors, who have gifted works of art from their private collections, and of the Frank and Ellen Remai Modern Foundation, which in 2017 pledged $1 million per year for 25 years to support art purchases.
