Born in Budapest, George Csató studied with artists such as Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger in Vienna in the 1930s. The portrait, Mrs. Clare K. Mendel, was one of many works Fred Mendel commissioned. Csató was primarily an advocate of abstraction throughout his artistic career, but he had great success in the 1950s and ‘60s painting portraits of famous artists and thinkers.

In January 1956, the following was reported in the minutes of the annual meeting, held in Saskatoon, of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and its Ladies' Auxiliary: In the evening, Mrs. Fred S. Mendel, wife of the owner of the Intercontinental Packing Company, received the ladies in the reception room at the plant. Following cocktails, an opportunity was provided to view part of the famous Mendel Art Collection, after which a delightful supper was served in the cafeteria. Later, the ladies were taken to the Saskatoon Art Centre, where Mr. George Csató, a European artist, opened his display for inspection and gave a brief description of his own particular style of work.
