In his early life, A. Y. Jackson worked at a printing firm in Montreal before earning enough money to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. He then studied Impressionism in Paris, where he decided to become a professional painter. He soon befriended and often sketched with the Toronto painters later known as the Group of Seven.

The Monastery, Assisi was painted during a visit to Northern Italy in the winter of 1912-13. The vigorous brushwork, clarity of light and freshness of this painting were the qualities that first attracted the attention of Lawren Harris and J. E. H. MacDonald. Jackson continued to use a screen of trees to great effect, although his palette became more naturalistic.
