On View
Not on viewIn addition to collecting art, Fred Mendel also commissioned paintings, such as this bird’s-eye view of his plant. Nationally respected as a landscape artist as well as an influential art teacher in Saskatchewan, Ernest Lindner is best known for his works in watercolour and pencil. Intercontinental Pork Plant is not typical of Lindner’s work, in much of which he explored the cycle of life, especially the northern Saskatchewan forests.
Fred Mendel reminisced about his collection in his 1972 memoir, Book and Life of a Little Man: “Eva got in touch with artists in Saskatoon, painters like the Prairie pioneer Ernest Lindner, the younger Bill Perehudoff, and others. She urged me to buy their paintings, and I must admit that I have had pleasure from possessing some of their works. Clare had renovated a suite of rooms above the offices in the packing plant and we established residence there. I enjoyed hanging the walls with paintings, and our little collection began to be known.”
