Picasso worked in Vallauris, in the south of France at the Madoura pottery studio, run by Suzanne and Georges Ramié, between 1946 to 1971. The tripod shape was developed by Suzanne based on an ancient Cypriot vase. The graceful portrait of Picasso’s girlfriend Françoise Gilot, with her head resting in her hands, contrasts with a playful face on the other side of the vase.
