Fieldwork 2015 is a large installation is comprised of 34 objects originally belonging to the artist or made by him. Ryan Gander’s installation represents a mini-collection embodying psychological, cultural and social dimensions associated with the objects. In fact, each object tells a story of significance to the artist. While the narrative potential of these objects is opaque, an accompanying publication and audio recording offers descriptions and insights into the artist’s ideas. These objects are only visible through a small window as they move, one-by-one, along a conveyer belt. One has a short time to consider each object before it disappears out of view. A central theme in Gander’s work is the power of the imagination, especially when piqued by a lack of visibility or access, where one is left to imagine what might be.
