Frederick Lucas Foster was born and died in Toronto, Ontario. He probably received his first art training at Upper Canada College under John Howard and was trained in basic draughtsmanship at the local Military School. Later, her was apprenticed as a provincial land surveyor and began his career in Windsor in 1865. His work was exhibited at the Toronto Industrial Exhibition and he was elected a member of the Ontario Society of Artists. Foster’s principal interests were genre and landscape scenes in oil and watercolour executed in a topographical style.
