Johnston worked in commercial art in Toronto and New York, and as a war artist in Canada during the First World War. He joined the Group of Seven in their painting trips to Algoma from 1918 to 1920; however, he only exhibited in one Group show, in 1920. He taught art in Winnipeg (was the director of the Winnipeg School of Art) from 1921 to 1924. Also taught at the University of Manitoba (1922), Ontario College of Art (1928-30). From 1930 to 1940, he operated his own school on Georgian Bay.
