Cornelius KrieghoffCanadian, 1815 - 1872

Cornelius Kreighoff was born in Amsterdam, Holland and died in Chicago, Illinois. It seems that he studied in Germany at the Dusseldorf Academy probably under Johann Hasenclever and as a youth travelled throughout Europe as an itinerant musician and painter. Kreighoff emigrated to the United States in 1837 and arrived in Canada about three years later. Most of his career was spent in either Montreal or Quebec City but he did complete a series of Niagara Falls scenes based on the work of Henry S. Davis and Frederick W. Lock. His work was exhibited at the early Art Association of Montreal. Kreighoff paintings are usually in oil or watercolour and employ academic genre, landscape and portrait subjects.
