William Edwin AtkinsonCanadian, 1862 - 1926

William Edwin Atkinson was born in Toronto, Ontario. His early studies were at the Ontario College of Art with John A. Fraser and Robert Harris in 1881, then at the Pensylvania Academy in Philadelphia under Thomas Eakins in 1883-84. Later, he studied in Paris at the Academie Julian under Adolphe Bouguereau and Bagriel Ferrier and at the Academie Delance. He was an associate of Paul Peel and later travelled in southwestern Ontario portraying its landscapes. During his career, he was elected as Associate member of the Royal Canadian Academy, the Ontario Society of Artists and was a founding member of the Canadian Art Club. Atkinson is known primarily for his landscapes which he created in the popular styles of the Dutch and British schools.
