Cornelius Krieghoff was born in Amsterdam and spent a number of years in the United States before settling in Quebec. By 1846, he had established himself as one of the most talented and successful Canadian painters of the 19th century, and his renowned scenes of Québécois and indigenous life were especially popular with tourists and English-speaking clientele.

Krieghoff’s representations of contemporary Quebec landscapes and genre scenes were as well-known and sought-after in his own lifetime as they are today. Although his paintings followed the European style demanded at the time, they seemed to embody Canadian life. The period in which Sault-à-la-Puce, Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré was painted is considered to be his strongest; in fact, he made very few paintings after this point. This painting features the forests and rivers that were at the core of the all-important timber industry, and which also served as the playground for a growing business and middle class.
