John Reeves
John Reeves was born in Burlington, Ontario, in 1938. After one year of art studies at Sir George Williams Art School in Montreal, he returned to Ontario to spend four years at the Ontario College of Art & Design, graduating in 1961. He became interested in photography at OCAD and decided to pursue it professionally as a feature photographer for magazines. Reeves's work has appeared in every major Canadian magazine extant since the launch of his freelance photographic practice in 1962. During a career that spanned roughly 50 years, he created more than 500 compelling photographs of international figures, including Margaret Atwood, Marshall McLuhan, Tony Bennett and Dizzy Gillespie. Reeves was elected to membership in the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) in 1975 and received the Canadian Association of Photographers & Illustrators (CAPIC) Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2002. He died of cancer on November 3, 2016 in Toronto, Ontario.
